A Simple Instant Pot Bone Broth

We’ve been full steam on the Konmari Method in our home – which pretty much everyone is familiar with at this point. But we’ve also taken some of those principles into other aspects of our life, including giving our diets a little spring clean.  Doing this internal Spring cleaning isn’t so much about what we are taking out, but about what we are adding back in. For me it’s all about re-prioritizing gut health, starting with putting bone broth back into the mix. But more importantly, instant pot bone broth. It’s a game changer.

Now, bone broth is not new around my house. In fact, I’ve been drinking bone broth since before it became a wellness craze a few years ago. But the thing about bone broth is that it typically takes a whole day to make. It is indeed a labor of love, which is fantastic because you can taste the love and care that goes into it; but with three small children and an unusually busy schedule as of late, it’s easy to see why it kinda fell off the menu the last 6months.

Insert Instant Pot Bone Broth

I’m not going to lie; I’ve been actively avoiding the Instant Pot craze. My grandmother used an old school pressure cooker, and I’ve been eyeballing this beautiful Italian Stovetop Pressure cooker (via Food52) for a while. I’m also in the process of getting rid of things that don’t spark joy, including kitchen items, and so the aesthetics of the instant pot kept it on the “don’t need” list.  But, someone told me I could make bone broth in an instant pot in under 4 hours, and I just couldn’t pass that up.

So, I finally got onto the Instant Pot (IP) bandwagon. And you guys, WHY the HELL was I holding out? This bone broth is super silky, super thick (hello, Collagen!), and deeply nourishing. But most astonishingly… it only took me 2.5hrs in the IP. Yup, you heard me 2.5hrs: without any skimming or messing around. Holla!

Now, I’m still playing with the recipe because a little birdie told me I could make a few tweaks and full-on gelled bone broth; which is the holy grail of bone broth. But in the meantime, this gelatinous broth (think thick layer of fat on top, jiggly broth underneath) is still super healthy and fabulous.

All you gotta do is👇🏽:

  1. Throw a bunch of chicken bones in the IP – The bones from a roasted chicken (or two). I like to throw in some particularly cartilaginous bones if you have them (marrow bones or chicken feet which I pick up any time I’m at the international market & throw in the freezer for just this occasion)
  2. Add about 2tbsp herbs & seasoning – I like Thyme + Rosemary (& salt + peppercorns)
  3. Add whatever veg you fancy (optional) – I love Onion + Garlic
  4. Fill with filtered water to the MAX line of the IP
  5. Hit the “Soup/Broth” button – that’s high pressure & “normal” cook time.
    1. The IP will beep when done, allow it to naturally depressurize- this takes about 15-20mins.

Boom… bone broth in record time (approximately 2-2.5hrs).

Want to have a Boosted Broth? When you pull out a serving of broth to drink, add an adaptogen of choice or just a little turmeric + pepper to boost the nutrient density of this yummy drink. I use a small hand blender to mix the add-ins and enjoy.

Benefits of Bone Broth

Bone broth truly nourishes the body and soul. Not only it is warm, nurturing, and good for the soul. But it is also rich in glycine, good fats, collagen, and keratin. Glycine is important for your body’s natural collagen production but is also great for building muscle, lowering inflammation, and supporting brain health. Those good fats are necessary for keeping your full, healing your gut, and supporting a healthy diet. As for the collagen and keratin, just say hello to glowing skin and hair.

Also, my kids love it. Jackpot!

Is the Instant Pot worth it?

I’ve gotten this question a lot. I’ve been on the fence because I’m still on the fence about whether it’s a kitchen necessity. I got the IP Duo 60  7-in-1 version, and so far I’ve only used it for bone broth.  I paid $79 because of it was mislabeled at my Target, and they honored the (incorrect) price-tag. And if it means that my fridge is continuously stocked with bone broth, then it’s worth it to me. Also, once I venture to use it for all of the other uses (Slow Cooker, Rice Cooker, Steamer, Sauté, Yogurt Maker and Warmer), I’ll probably turn into one of the IP mega fans.

I will say that this version is kind of large. I don’t have any shortage of cabinet space, so it lives under our kitchen island when not in use. But if you have limited space, you might want to look into either getting rid of the appliances the IP is supposed to replace or going with a smaller version. I’ll be sure to share recipes as I play around with the machine and weigh in as to whether or not it really replaces all the others.

So… do you even bone broth, bro?

Tell me, do you drink bone broth? If so, do you make your own? And if not, what’s stopping you? I wanna know, leave it in the comments.

Xo, Kimberly Fe'Lix
