5 Black Women Owned Wellness Brands

February is coming to a close, and I couldn’t let this month end without celebrating Black History Month with you all. Today I’m sharing a quick little listicle to highlight five black women-owned wellness brands that you should support now, and all year long; because they are the bomb dot com. Additionally, lest you think being black is only cool one month out of the year, I’ll be sure to sprinkle some more resources throughout the next month. A few of you asked for a list of my favorite books to share with my kiddos to ensure that they see black greatness every month; so stay tuned because it’s so important.

Speaking of Black women in wellness: I myself was featured on thegoodtrade.com in an article written by a fellow green living Insta-friend (Leah Thomas @greengirlleah). The article, 13 Black Women In Wellness Share What Wellness & Self Care Means To Them, can be found HERE. I’m obviously sharing it because I was featured, but it stars some other pretty bomb ass women, too. So be sure to check it out. I am so honored and happy to continue to be recognized in this space and to continue to make an impact. So, in the spirit of sharing more women of color in wellness, here’s my own little roundup 👇🏽.

** In alphabetical order, because there is no hierarchy here. Just goodness all around. FYI- some links are affiliate links. It’s just another way you can support a black woman in wellness.**

5 Black Women-owned Wellness Businesses

Beneath your Mask

I’ve talked about Beneath Your Mask (BYM) before as a part of an Indie Beauty Spotlight and it’s a brand that I keep falling more and more in love with. First of all, can we all just take a moment to look at how Dana, the founder, is SLAYING in this photo? I mean!?! Hello!

Dana, the founder of BYM, created this brand after being diagnosed with Lupus. Her story is so amazing and inspiring, and the product line that she birthed is beautiful, clean, and soothing. The Heal Whipped Souffle is so luxe and nourishing, and the Nourish Skin + Hair serum does it all.

Brown + Coconut

How cute are Letisha + Zeena of Brown + Coconut? In 2013 these sisters started B&C as a blog sharing their journey to improve their health and skin. In 2016, they launched the product line. And in 2018 they are featured in the likes of Well+Good, Bustle, & Refinery 29. Talk about a come up!

The impetus for creating this line was a struggle with acne prone skin. Like many of the women on this list, they saw a problem (too many toxins, ineffective formulations) and they worked to solve it. The full lineup ranges from cleansers to body oil. But my fave product is the Healing Kale Mask. You know I can’t get enough of a good mask, and this one is filled with kale, French green clay, lemon verbena, neem, thyme, and honeysuckle. It soothes irritation and clears skin.

Golde

Golde was founded on the simple principle of making wellness more accessible. And you all know that is a message I can get behind. Trinity founded Golde in 2017, and it became an instant sensation. I for one am glad to see wellness become more inclusive and engaging.  The original tonic was a simple turmeric blend with coconut and ginger. It’s delicious, potent, and blends beautifully.

I’m personally a fan of keeping it old school, but I just ordered the Cacao blend to see if my sons would like it as an evening treat. And if you’re into matcha, they’ve got a matcha blend that takes the guesswork out of making a perfect matcha latte.

Just scoop and blend with your favorite milk or nut milk (recipes here). If you’re looking to add a nutrient dense superfood boost to your daily routine, you cannot go wrong with Golde Tonics.

A Steal!

While supplies last try all 3 Golde Tonics for $55 via a limited edition wellness discovery offered by Beauty Heroes, one of my fave clean beauty/wellness subscription brands–  read about my 5 fave green beauty subscriptions here. This is a limited edition discovery, which means no subscription necessary. That’s a $78 value for only $55; you just can’t beat it.

Herpothecary

I found Herpothecary on Instagram because it’s 2019 and that’s how you find people. If you’re a D.C. local, you can find her posted up and pushing soap at The Spice Suitealso black owned! Maya is an herbalist and a true artist pushing all kinds of healing vibes out into the universe. I mean her soaps and scrubs look and smell amazing.

What you’re gonna wanna do is, get you some of that Milk n’ Honey (soap bar) or Apple Honey whipped soap (omg!) and lather it up real good. Then when you step out of the shower seal all that moisture in with the luxe whipped body butter. Then find some cashmere socks and a good book because you’ll feel hella indulgent. Maya also makes an assortment of wellness products, like an elderberry syrup kit that I can’t wait to share with you later; this winter has been harsh, and my immune system could use it!

The Honey Pot Co

The name alone got my attention. The Honey Pot Company is, you guessed it, a brand that focuses on feminine hygiene. As you know I am a huge proponent for having the conversation about menstruation – it’s important to destygmatize menstruation and feminine care in general.

Beatrice, the founder, created the plant based feminine wash to address bacterial vaginosis (which is hella common & should be talked about more– no shame!) and the brand grew into so much more. Now you can find menstural products, cleansing systems, and lubricant. What I like is you won’t ever find chemicals, toxins, or artificial fragrances. Everything is gynecologist-approved, and the products are also biodegradable and cruelty-free.

Bonus! Blk + Grn

Because I couldn’t do a roundup of black women-owned wellness businesses without including Blk + Grn. If you are unfamiliar, you are in for a treat. Blk + Grn is an all natural marketplace featuring all black artisans. Founded by Dr. Kristian Henderson, the mission is to connect Black women to the tools, resources, knowledge, and products they need to lead happier and healthier lives.

Blk + Grn is a glorious celebration of black women and it features many other brands that I can’t wait to discover. If you are looking to invest in clean, non-toxic wellness, beauty, and lifestyle products within the black community. This is an excellent place to start.

Thank you for sharing this list. I found you in the article you were featured in. And knew about a couple of the women you wrote about, but several are new to me. It’s encouraging to know that more black women are emphasizing wellness.
