In the summer my children like to pick fruit and play with the fruits of their labor. This usually means spending a little bit of time together in the kitchen; which I love. Sometimes ripe summer fruit yields a delicious smoothie or homemade popsicles, but today I want to share with you a quick chia seed jam that comes together in no time and makes everything burst of summer goodness.
Chia seeds are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber. They are also packed with vital nutrients like iron, calcium, and zinc. These tiny seeds are a great addition to smoothies and oatmeal, or as a thickening agent like in this jam. This little recipe (not-recipe) comes together quickly and epitomizes my favorite food mantra, “real food, fast!” Best of all, you can use whatever fruit or berries you have on hand. Jackpot!
Quick Homemade Chia Seed Jam
Kitchen Tools:
- Saucepan
- Whisk
- Silicone Spatula
- 16oz Mason Jar
Gather These:
- 3 cups organic berries (dealers choice, I used strawberry)
- 1/4 cup filtered water
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup (for sweetness)
- 2 tablespoons chia seeds
- 1/2 lemon juiced
Do this:
- Add berries + water + maple syrup to saucepan
- Bring mixture to boil, then reduce heat, simmer 10-12 minutes, whisking occasionally
- With the whisk, lightly mash the berries
- Remove from heat + add chia seeds, mix well
- Wait about 5 minutes for the mixture to cool, then add lemon juice
- Stir & transfer to Mason Jar
- Enjoy!
Serving Suggestions:
- On toast, scones, biscuits, or bagels
- Mixed in with yogurt, or as a layered parfait
- Blueberry Chia jam (with a little more liquid) is almost like a compote, pour it over waffles.
And there you have it a two-in-one summer treat and fun activity to do with the kiddos. Your chia seed jam should last about a week in the fridge. Spread generously and enjoy!
