Travel with kids can be daunting; I get it. But the best part about living in Los Angeles with kids is the ability to make a quick little jaunt up or down the coast to explore, discover, and enjoy childhood unplugged. There are plenty of things that can be done to make travel with kids more fun, and I’ll be sure to share some of our tried and true travel tips soon, but in the meantime, I want to feature a few super kid-friendly California destinations that are only a stone’s throw away from Los Angeles.
If you live near L.A. hop in the car and make it happen, and if you’re traveling to L.A. for an extended holiday, I promise you it’s worth the rental car.
Today I’m sharing The Aquarium of the Pacific, which is in Long Beach California.
Long Beach
Long Beach is only about 45mins south of Los Angeles so it absolutely needs to be on your list of places to visit with kids. Unlike our trip to Santa Barbara, which is on the outer end of what you can do in a single day with kids, Long Beach is an easy day trip. Which is great, since there so many things to do there you’ll want to go back often. If you’re into outdoor sports and recreation, Long Beach is a literal playground. There are nearly 6 miles of waterfront bike trails, tons of water sports, and a good dose of semi-pro beach events. It really is a great place to explore the outdoors.
But if you have small children and you’re thinking to take it a little easier, the Aquarium of the Pacific is really the best place to explore.
Aquarium of the Pacific
If you’ve ever been to an aquarium before chances are you have an idea of what to expect here. But with 11,000 animal exhibits, Harbor Tours, 4D film experiences, and family festivals, this aquarium is really one of a kind. You’ll want to think about your visit before you take off to be sure to time it so that you can take advantage of the numerous animal encounters and events. Another benefit of planning your trip in advance is the opportunity to save a little money by taking advantage of the Aquarium/Zoo combo tickets.
We went for Jeremiah’s third birthday and decided to keep it really low key since we could easily return for a trip to the Zoo. We were surprised at the sheer volume of people considering we went on a weekday in March, but that’s the nature of the beast with SoCal… someone is always on vacation. If you’re making the trek be sure to account for the time it takes to get parked and through the ticket line.
Tip 1: Get there in time to see a Dive
We planned to be low key but got lucky to have made it just in time to see the divers in the big tank during feeding time. My two year old was mesmerized. If you’re trying to entertain small children, this is for sure the best way to kick off your visit.
Tip 2: Always take time for the Jellies
The Aquarium of the Pacific has an extensive collection of jellyfish. It is truly a sight to behold and an excellent opportunity to talk about bioluminescence with the young grade school set. Our six year old definitely and it’s important to us that we are always explaining the science behind the magic… or perhaps it’s the magic behind the science. 😉
Tip 3: Let the kids lead
This is one that is easier said than done, especially considering I’m such a control freak. But… without fail, if my husband and I relax a little and focus on guiding our children while letting them lead, the experience is transformative. My sons are inquisitive, they make natural connections, and they enjoy themselves more, and protest less. It’s truly a win for everyone.
Tip 4: Shark Lagoon
This is an absolute. It’s one of the coolest touch pools I’ve seen in a while and the kids lose their minds over the lemon sharks and various rays. It was the highlight of the trip for me.
After the Aquarium
Don’t forget that outside of the Aquarium there is a large area for outdoor exploration. There is a veranda with views of Harbor 14, a huge fountain, and Shoreline Aquatic Park; all excellent for letting the kids stretch their legs. The park also has an old lighthouse which the kids really seemed to enjoy. In case you’re wondering because what parent isn’t, there are bathrooms in the park.
After a few hours at the aquarium, and another 30-40 mins exploring the park you’ll be in good shape to put some food in the kids and hit the road back to L.A. If you’re like us you can pack a lunch and plan to picnic or enjoy any of the excellent restaurants nearby in the nearby Downtown Shoreline Marina.
Bonus: The Pike Outlets
If your little ones haven’t come undone, the Pike Outlets are right near the Aquarium and have additional food options and you can even get in a little shopping. I picked up new shoes for the boys and browsed the Restoration Hardware before we loaded up the car and made our way home.
Have you been to the Aquarium of the Pacific? What’s your favorite part?
